Hey there, this is Doctor Luong from Resilience Chiropractic here in San Leandro. Thanks for tuning in today.

You know, I’ve been practicing for years now, and I can tell you — the number one thing I see walking through my door has changed. It used to be people coming in after lifting something heavy or sleeping wrong. Now? It’s neck pain, headaches, and shoulder tension from sitting at screens all day long. And honestly, it’s not just adults anymore. I’m seeing teenagers and even kids with the same issues.

So let’s talk about why posture matters more than ever in our screen-focused world.

Here’s the thing. Your head weighs about ten to twelve pounds when it’s sitting nicely balanced on top of your spine. But for every inch your head moves forward — which is what happens when you’re looking down at your phone or hunched over a laptop — the stress on your neck doubles or even triples. Imagine carrying a bowling ball around your neck all day. That’s basically what’s happening.

And we’re doing this for hours every single day. The average person spends somewhere between seven to ten hours looking at screens. That’s more time than we spend sleeping. Our bodies just weren’t designed for this.

Now, here’s what’s actually happening inside. When you slouch forward, your shoulders round, your chest muscles get tight, and the muscles in your upper back have to work overtime trying to hold you up. Eventually, they get tired and weak. Your spine starts to change shape. The curves that are supposed to absorb shock and keep you balanced start to flatten out or shift forward. And that’s when the pain starts showing up.

But it’s not just about pain. Poor posture affects how you breathe. When your shoulders are rolled forward and your chest is collapsed, your lungs can’t fully expand. You’re literally limiting your oxygen intake. People don’t realize that fixing their posture can help them feel less tired and more energized.

So what can you do about it? Let me give you three simple things you can start today.

First — set up your workspace properly. Your screen should be at eye level. Not below eye level — right at eye level. Your keyboard and mouse should let your elbows rest at about ninety degrees. Your feet should be flat on the floor. I know it sounds basic, but most people have never actually set up their desk correctly.

Second — take movement breaks. Every thirty minutes, stand up, roll your shoulders back, stretch your arms overhead, and take a few deep breaths. Set a timer if you have to. Your body needs to move. Sitting in one position for hours is like leaving your car parked in the same spot for months — things start to seize up.

Third — strengthen your upper back. The muscles between your shoulder blades need to be strong to pull your shoulders back and support good posture. Simple exercises like squeezing your shoulder blades together or doing rows with a resistance band can make a huge difference.

Now, here’s when you should come see someone like me. If you’re dealing with persistent neck pain, headaches that won’t go away, numbness or tingling in your arms or hands, or if you just notice your posture is really off and you can’t seem to correct it on your own — get evaluated. We can check your spine alignment, identify muscle imbalances, and create a plan to get you feeling better.

The good news is this stuff is fixable. I see it every day. People come in hunched over and uncomfortable, and with the right adjustments, exercises, and ergonomic changes, they leave standing taller and feeling so much better.

Your posture is the foundation for how your whole body functions. Taking care of it now means fewer problems down the road.
